Protect the View on Our Public Roads

RECEIVED Sun., Aug. 19, 2007

Dear Editor,
A shortsighted and very ugly proposal is to be considered by the Texas Transportation Commission, 125 E. 11th, Aug. 23 at 9am. The proposal allows the big outdoor sign companies to pollute more than ever with huge, brighter, computerized billboards – giant TV screens with 24/7 changeable ads. While driving to school, church, work, or even vacation, do I really need to be distracted with multiple places to shop, drink, and even get my sexual needs met? Eighty-eight percent of Arizona citizens polled in 2005 said no to these garish signs, because they distract drivers from the safe operation of their vehicles. Survey results: www.scenic.org/pdfs/ElectronicBBSurvey.pdf. Our recently buried and dearly beloved Lady Bird Johnson must be turning in her grave. Let’s not let the “billboard boys” further pollute our scenic view and glorious Texas countryside. Transportation commissioners: Protect our public roads!
