Kudos to Some of the Large Employers

RECEIVED Fri., Nov. 3, 2006

Dear Editor,
I would like to applaud some of the large employers. Now before some of the small businesses get huffy, let me explain the context. When young adults have recently graduated from college, they face a lot of career options. Or so people might think. These days, the problem is not that there are fewer career choices; in fact, there are more. However, the willingness to make investments in staff has gone down significantly, except in some of the larger businesses. The whole idea is, "I don't want to have to train new people." Well, guess what: If you don't train new people, you can't get new ideas, and your business doesn't grow. It's time for people to stop deciding that only people with five years or more of experience have a right to work. I'm not saying that everyone has to settle for less than quality, but I think foresight needs to come more into play as far as Austin is concerned. Austin, there's a lot of development going on, and if nobody gains the experience to get jobs to pay for it, we'll find ourselves back in recession.
