Endorses SustainLane Criteria

RECEIVED Wed., March 29, 2006

Dear Editor,
SustainLane, a Web site that offers "a community-generated guide for living a better life."
The SustainLane U.S. city rankings are the nation's first detailed report card on city quality of life combined with indicators of sustainability programs, policies, and performance. The rankings gauge a city's sustainability factor in 12 different areas, among them energy, clean water, availability of local agriculture, and transportation issues.
Austin ranked sixth of the top 25 cities studied. Congratulations Austin! Kudos also went to Mayor Will Wynn for his sustainability focus and the 1999 city sustainability plan.
There is a dark side though – Austin rated extremely poorly on public transportation, and not so well on energy/climate issues and solid waste management. We need a lot more work on these important sustainability criteria.
Sustainability will be essential to economic survival as the nation's energy supplies begin to dwindle in the coming few years. Citizens need to understand more about this and can learn about the energy problem at www.crudeawakening.org. The SustainLane rankings can be viewed at: www.sustainlane.com/cityindex.
