All Have Been Affected

RECEIVED Tue., Nov. 15, 2005

Dear Sir,
Thank you! Well done [“Justice or Vengeance?,” News, Nov. 4]! I am Rick Giesy, Kate Giesy's father. My prayers ask that all concerned be helped when their minds rerun those tragic moments, or think of the moments that will never be for both families.
All who love Terence [McArdle] or Brandon [Threet] and have been affected by this goes way beyond their immediate families. In my family alone, depression sets in while just looking at any of the pictures we have around the house of our young children, shining with the twinkle you wrote about, of innocence, hope, and invincibility.
Your photo of Brandon in prison confirmed my fears that he is losing his youth and all it awards you with. Only surpassed by life itself, the loss of youth and its treasures is incomparable. We called it the thousand-year stare in Vietnam. Those of us who survived combat and all its horrors left our youth in Vietnam. We returned as I fear that Brandon will someday, shells of what might have been. Never kick a man when he's down. That unwritten rule was broken, with most tragic and heartbreaking results for the families and countless others. It is my opinion that swift justice and punishment for this is appropriate certainly, but the severity of Brandon's sentence was improper and unjust!
I will not even suggest that I can understand the daily agony that the McArdles are going through. I can only pray for them and hope they can someday tolerate a lesser sentence, before his twinkle is gone.
