Dear Editor, The recent traffic jams involving the evacuation of Houston should come as a wake-up call to us all. We the People need to elect officials who understand that we need high-speed rail, buses, and other modes of transportation to assist our Texas cities during evacuations. Many folks could have left via train if we had had the political will in the past to approve legislation to fund alternative transportation. Alternative transportation has been touted as a means of improving traffic congestion, but after Rita it should be clear that inter-city high speed rail could prove very effective in saving lives in the event of a natural or man-made disaster in one of our major cities.
