Republicans Only Care About Winning

RECEIVED Tue., May 24, 2005

Dear Editor,
I think Louis Black has it a little wrong as to why Republican supporters are reveling in Republican wins over the Democrats ["Page Two," May 20], even though so many things are worse in the country and even though the current Republican Party has abandoned so many traditional Republican positions.
Republicans are reveling because, for them, everything is about winning. Who wins and who loses is all that matters. The actual outcome of policies isn't important.
The winners' and losers' mentalities can be seen in the way they approach the issues, also. For instance, natural resources are scarce and dwindling, Democrats are likely to approach the problem by saying, "Can we conserve resources? Can we find alternative resources? How can we deal with resources in order to ensure a quality living standard for all?" Republicans, on the other hand, are more likely to say, "Since resources are scarce, I'd better make sure I get the lion's share. What happens to everyone else doesn't matter. I want to be the winner."
