Dear Editor, Reading The Austin Chronicle online, I noted the successful passage of the school bond proposal in Austin ["School Bond Proposals Roll to Victory," News, Sept. 17]. Very impressive! Unfortunately, the voters in my own school district here in Monterey, Calif., turned down a bond proposal, and we are experiencing school closures and teacher layoffs as a result. Too many voters were counting on George Bush to "leave no child behind" and didn't realize he failed to provide the funds necessary for that program to succeed. I hope the citizens of Austin will vote Democratic in November so our country can get serious about leaving no child behind.
