Throw CAMPO Bums Out

RECEIVED Thu., July 22, 2004

Dear Austin Chronicle,
I am shocked at the behavior of the CAMPO board members who voted for the terrible toll plan ["Road Foes: Down, but Not Out?," News, July 23]. I was so disgusted at the behavior of the TxDOT representatives at the meeting on July 12 that I had to leave long before the vote. They either purposely evaded answering several questions from board members who were opposed to the tolls, or they did not know the answers. The flurry of meaningless amendments from the board members who voted for the plan do almost nothing to protect the environment and do not address the fact that some of these improvements have already been paid for by tax dollars at all.
This is not the kingdom of CAMPO. The vast majority of the board members are elected officials from our communities who are supposed to represent us. They have an obligation to listen to their constituents. Ninety-one percent of us spoke loudly and clearly, but we were still ignored. The 16 board members who voted for the plan are not fit to continue making decisions for our community. I urge the citizens of Central Texas to support recall efforts or to vote against the elected members of the sorry 16 at election time. Maybe then they will understand that no means no.
