Celebrates the Music of Scott H. Biram

RECEIVED Wed., March 31, 2004

Dear Editor,
"There ain't no way," cries Scott H. Biram, "I'm a put my foot in there." He stomps that left foot on a homemade box of chalk that's tied to his feet, like a madman without a cause. There's a Texas flag hangin' behind him, and a phosphorescent red light shines bright upon his mesh trucker hat he wears proudly alongside his $5 pair of Velcro sneakers from Wal-Mart. And this ain't no fake trucker hat from fuckin' Urban Outfitters, we're talkin' the real deal. He probably got this one from the Tiger Truck Stop on I-10, which he proudly displays on his guitar case. Scott plays blues music like it's supposed to be played, covering such artists as Leadbelly, Mance Lipscomb, and the Stanley Brothers. He's a multi-instrumentalist, switchin' between his Gibson ES125s, one a '59 and the other a '66, and his case full of harmonicas. The crowd is mixed, with yuppies, punks, and rockabillies, all stompin' to that ol' Delta sound. You can barely see his eyes, lest his face, as he hugs his old vintage microphone. Surprisingly he ain't throwin' back Lone Star after Lone Star, but a bottle of Ozarka and a sheepish grin. He just started an ol' Woody Guthrie tune in the key of G, and the folks are lovin' it. Scott is old-school in the true sense of the phrase, resurrecting the ol' Depression era sound of the Twenties and Thirties, but doin' it with a style that can't seem to shake his punk rock/rockabilly upbringin'. His songs have been covered by such artists as Hank Williams III and Harry Dean Stanton. Even local troubadour Will Johnson was spotted with a "Jesus Loves Scott H. Biram" bumper sticker on his amplifier. For folks who wanna hear good ol' time music with a youthful exuberance, Scott's the man to provide it. He's currently recording his fourth album with local hillbillies the Weary Boys, hopefully due out in a couple of months, or "maybe six" according to Scott. So all you Austinites who claim to be real music lovers, save your dough for the next Scott H. Biram show.
