    Special Screenings

    Amadeus 4K Restoration (1984)

Picture this, Reader: A freshly 14-year-old James opening birthday gifts in the middle of Peter Piper Pizza. (Even though I KNOW there is a location in Austin, in case you’re unaware, PPP is an arcade/pizza eatery similar to ye olde Chuck E. Cheese.) My best friend at the time gets me the hottest two-disc DVD any teen could want: eight-Oscar-winner Amadeus. His reasoning? “I saw it and I thought you might like it.” Guess what? I love Amadeus. A beautiful tale of terminal hater-ation, the film lays out Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s life story through narration by contemporary composer Salieri – played by a red-hot F. Murray Abraham delivering side-eyes that’d melt the flesh off a lesser adversary. But gleeful giggling Mozart as played by Tom Hulce can’t be taken down by a mere look. His great weakness is an all-timer: daddy issues. – James Scott

    Austin Percussion Collective

As a reminder that jazz isn’t the only (mostly) instrumental music that matters, Monks Jazz also hosts regular classical music performances with their Classical Jam series. This edition features the Austin Percussion Collective, conceived in 2023 by players from across the country. Rotating musicians in and out as determined by need, the group will include pieces by, among others, Gabriela Ortiz, Robert Honstein, Paul Rennick, Daniel Wirtz, and Minoru Miki – plus the world premiere of “BIRDFROG,” composed by member Sebastian Zhang. From mallet instruments to drums to bells and beyond, the Collective weaves wonders with anything that can be struck or shaken. – Michael Toland

    Hot Topix: Sports!

Wahoo! Sports! All the balls and bats, the kneepads and shin guards, the fields and courts: Celebrate this gay-ass pastime of the fit & fabulous with Austin International Drag Foundation. Drag king Syd Prescott hosts with special guest judge Kelsey Hammer bringing the “hammer” down on which performers bring the best drag game to this competition. Winner scores $150, plus bragging rights that they’re the VIP. Tickets to witness this tournament run $10, but all proceeds go toward funding AIDF’s big drag convention. Again, I say: Wahoo! – James Scott

    Shelley King & Carolyn Wonderland

When Shelley King and Carolyn Wonderland combine forces, magic seems to follow. Exceptional roots and blues artists in their own right, their shows together over the past few years weld the guitar firebrands in mutual support, especially when Wonderland’s scorching signature blues licks lean into King’s soulful vocals and songwriting. After five years touring with John Mayall, Wonderland returned with 2021’s blistering Tempting Fate, while King’s Madam Mystic, released last year, balances deeply cutting folk with funk-laced grooves. James McMurtry and Bonnie Whitmore & the Sad Girls hold down the late-night slots. – Doug Freeman

Sundance Short Film Festival Tour 2024

It often feels like the fate of a short film after festival season is ignominious anonymity at the whim of some streaming platform’s algorithm. Luckily, Utah’s Sundance Film Festival is giving these short but sweet delights more time on the big screen. The touring selection of seven miniature wonders includes three award-winners from this year’s festival: Spanish class war satire “The Masterpiece” (Short Film Grand Jury Prize), Japanese interspecies rom-com “Pisko the Crab Child in Love” (Special Jury Prize for Directing), and sexy insect comedy “Bug Diner” (Jury Award: Animation).: – Richard Whittaker

    The Bachelorette Viewing Party

Ahoy, Bachelor Nation! For a new season is upon us: the 21st, in fact, belatedly featuring the series’ first Asian Bachelorette, Jenn Tran. This show is always bonkers, especially at the beginning with the endless parade of suitors battling it out for any morsel of screen time, so you don’t want to watch alone! Starting this Tuesday and continuing weekly, take in all the romance, the laughs, the cringe with hosts Kino Kino and Gender Destruction. This week’s very special guest is Queen of Tuesgays Diamond Dior Davenport, and DJ deadlao5 will offer beats as well as commentary on what’s sure to be an unreal premiere. – Kat McNevins
