Austin Independent Book Fair Singles Mixer: LGBTQ Night

Despite skipping the first, straight-specific edition of this blind-date business, I come bearing details about Austin Indie Book Fair’s new singles mixer on its more important night: LGBTQ Night. Unattached parties can meet friends, lovers, or just a good book at this color-coded speed-dating game, where green means go and red means “eh, I’m just here for non-romantic fun.” Book vendors line the Radio/East locale, and you’ll also be able to sip one of their myriad drinkables. Plus: Single Mingle Bingo, where it’s all about finding folks who match each square. – James Scott

    Bat City Bingo

Mamma mia: Did you know the game we call bingo originated in Italy? Descended from the Italian lotto game, bingo has been delighting young and old – okay, mostly old – since the 1500s. Enjoy boffo bingo from your friends at Bat City Bingo, who bring free “beano” to patios all over town, every Tuesday at North Loop bar & kitchen Double Trouble. Advisable drink pairings with your bingo card: for the sober, a hot choc, and for the spirited, an Aperol Spritz. Foodwise, I mean, a taco goes with everything – this writer suggests the vegan picadillo. – James Scott

    Gutenberg! The Musical!

It’s all fun and games until art imitates life – then it’s even MORE fun and games! The local comedy crewmates of ColdTowne take this new Broadway hit and give it an Austin welcome. With Kat Williams and Kyle Romero in starring roles, direction by Matt Alspaugh, music by Ritika Bhattacharjee, and choreo by Sarah J. Bartholomew, comedy and musical theatre fans will delight alike in this onstage silliness. Catch a show or two during its run that lasts through July 20. – James Scott

    Queer Futures Short Film Festival

Accessibility is the name of the game when it comes to widening our cinematic consciousness. So when traveling short film compendium Queer Futures brings award-winning watches straight to our local film society’s screen, it’s like no-duh you should be snatching up a ticket. From fat queer liberation photographer Shoog McDaniel’s aquatic atmosphere piece “How to Carry Water” to trans health care talking-head doc “The Script,” nonbinary sister act exploration of ballroom “MnM” to romantic time-traveling tale-spinner “The Callers” – all these short flicks feature queer stories onscreen that’ll have you rooted to your seat. – James Scott
