Regine Malibiran is a woman of passion. She pours her soul into every project she undertakes – creative and entrepreneur, activist and advocate. Now as the founder of forth space productions, she has taken all of her passion and experience to forge a path for artists to express their truths fearlessly and with the support of forth space, whose mission and name derive from the “sociological concept of the fourth space as a realm where meaning is made and all the potential that lies between here and forward.” “BUMUO,” from the Tagalog for “whole,” is an exhibition that centers the strength and artistic brilliance of the Filipino community. Six artists tell the connective story of the Philippines, reclaiming their history, rejecting the manipulation of the colonizers who inhabited their home for four centuries, and building a future of healing and empowerment. To be honest, I’m having a hard time remembering when I first came across the leather-clad grandeur that is Chris Conde. It very well may have been a shout-out from another Austin legend, Mama Duke, at one of the first shows I ever attended with her as the headliner. It might have been a passing fancy that crossed my desk in the shape of a rapping metal-cased butterfly (#IYKYK). What I do know is that when I heard their acoustic version of Nineties Freaknik hood classic “Freak Like Me” by queen Adina Howard, I was irrevocably in love. It’s quite fitting that this NB shibari darlin’ will take the Little Darlin’ stage to ring in the nation’s near Semiquincentennial. Day of the Beast (1995)
If you lived through the Eighties and Nineties, you’ll remember that the only Spanish movies you saw in America were either sex comedies by Pedro Almodóvar or movies trying to be an Almodóvar-esque sex comedy. Thank Heaven – or Hell – for Álex de la Iglesia, who blew that perception apart and introduced the world to the sleazy and sacrilegious joys of Spanish horror with The Day of the Beast (El día de la bestia). Dirty Martin’s 98th Birthday
Plans change, as they say. When the city proposed a route for its new light rail, it seemed like Austin’s oldest burger joint was going to be demolished just short of its centennial. With a shifted route, this 98th birthday celebration is no longer a sad farewell but a warm up for the big show in two years’ time. The dirt floors on which John Martin set his flat-top grill and eight-stool bar in 1926 may have been covered up over the years, but the tradition of Dirty’s – home to Quentin Tarantino’s favorite burger in Austin – lives on. Has any filmmaker combined sex and violence with quite the disturbing potency as French filmmaker Jean Rollin? Unafraid to switch his career trajectory between arthouse shockers and hardcore skin flicks, he melded those elements perfectly in 1978’s Les raisins de la mort, a heady blend of eco-horror and eroticism that could be easily double-billed with either David Cronenberg’s Rabid or George A. When Tak “Tone” Nakamine became a born-again Christian in 2008, he may have found his faith, but he never once lost his need to ROCK! Heralded as “the first Christian heavy metal band from Japan,” this trio of metalheads are about one thing: blowing out your eardrums to the word of God. Though their sound does cross over into the more recognizable J-pop realm, the fact remains Nakamine (vocals and guitar) and his band members Marie (bass) and Shinryu (drums) lean heavily into Eighties metal like Judas Priest (how fitting) and Van Halen. They’re a rare breed, indeed – Japan’s faith demographic widely skewing toward Buddhism, while only about 1% of the population proclaims to practice Christianity. This has the potential to be an iconic occasion, one to which those who want to see some good old-fashioned headbanging should probably get a front-row seat. Katie Folger: Getting in Bed With the Pizza Man
“A lusty, self-written, one-woman oration on female sexual discovery, exploration, and empowerment.” That’s what we called Katie Folger’s one-woman show about dating in the pandemic when she debuted it in May 2023 at Crashbox. First Alanis, and now her sister in feminine angst Sarah McLachlan? It’s like 2024 is forcing me to relive all my unfulfilled Lilith Fair dreams! You can’t just toss the angelic majesty of Sarah Everloving McLachlan in my face and expect me to be emotionally okay! This woman is another in a long line of examples of women who have withstood the tests of time, apathy, and disrespect to build a formidable career without chipping too much of her soul away in the process – not an easy feat for a woman, in particular. This tour celebrates 30 years since the album that started her breakthrough journey. When Shelley King and Carolyn Wonderland combine forces, magic seems to follow. Exceptional roots and blues artists in their own right, their shows together over the past few years weld the guitar firebrands in mutual support, especially when Wonderland’s scorching signature blues licks lean into King’s soulful vocals and songwriting. After five years touring with John Mayall, Wonderland returned with 2021’s blistering Tempting Fate, while King’s Madam Mystic, released last year, balances deeply cutting folk with funk-laced grooves. Sundance Short Film Festival Tour 2024
It often feels like the fate of a short film after festival season is ignominious anonymity at the whim of some streaming platform’s algorithm. Luckily, Utah’s Sundance Film Festival is giving these short but sweet delights more time on the big screen. Weird Wednesday: Tank Girl (1995)
Everyone thought that only a maniac or a creative genius would dare to bring the unhinged punk artwork of British comic creator Jamie Hewlett to the screen. Fortunately, director Rachel Talalay got a little of both when she hired Austinite and future Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke as production designer for her off-the-chain adaptation of proto-riot grrrl oddity Tank Girl. Strap in with Lori Petty as the titular tank driver and Ice-T riding shotgun as a mutant kangaroo, and roll across a deranged near-future to a soundtrack provided by the best of women-fronted Nineties alt music outfits, including Veruca Salt, Hole, Belly, and Björk. – Richard WhittakerWed., July 3 -

Woman Is the Future of Man (2004)
Writer and director Hong Sang-soo is an icon of slice-of-life cinema from South Korea. His work is a master class in capturing the human condition in all its raw, unpretty, oftentimes uneventful glory. He’s able to paint his protagonists in shades of gray without them seeming dull. They simply are, and the life that happens around them forces them into colors that require attention – reds, blues, bruise purple, blinding yellow. While the stories themselves are unsensational, the intricate attention to character study earns the auteur an iconic status among the peninsula’s pantheon of iconic filmmakers, pushing the boundaries of comfort for an oddly conservative industry.
