  14th Annual 4th of July Corn Dog Eating Contest

  There are a lot of pleasurable things you could put in your pie hole, but is there any more American than the corn dog? (Checks Wikipedia… “Newly arrived German immigrants in Texas…” That’s the melting pot at work, y’all!) To be fair, this annual contest is not about patriotic ideals, but numbers: Specifically, how many corn dogs you can eat in eight minutes. Winner takes home a cash prize while everybody else can feel good about supporting Helping Hand Home, a local nonprofit supporting abused and neglected children. – Kimberley Jones

  Mamma mia: Did you know the game we call bingo originated in Italy? Descended from the Italian lotto game, bingo has been delighting young and old – okay, mostly old – since the 1500s. Enjoy boffo bingo from your friends at Bat City Bingo, who bring free “beano” to patios all over town, every Tuesday at North Loop bar & kitchen Double Trouble. Advisable drink pairings with your bingo card: for the sober, a hot choc, and for the spirited, an Aperol Spritz.   Queer Film Theory 101: Road Trips

  Who among us hasn’t taken a cross-country car journey that taught us a little about life, a little about love, and a lot about ourselves? Okay, most of us haven’t, but damn if movies don’t overrepresent this experience. This month, the cinematic-minded queer “professors” of Queer Film Theory 101 feature films about adventures on the gay ol’ gravel way and present on how these influenced their LGBTQ lives. And before you ask, no, not everyone can talk about sleepover staple Crossroads, but I’m sure someone will speak on this important work. –James Scott
