    Celebration of Life

Earlier this month, Austin's queer and kink and bear communities lost a good one. Former Chain Drive bartender Garold Bates, who later made a home behind the Iron Bear bar, passed away. Raise a shot of $2 peppermint schnapps (his shot of choice) in his honor and help raise some money to pay off the bills he left behind.: Garold was a cherished member of the qmmunity. In fact, the Chronicle was one of his many fans and in 2012 we awarded him a Best of Austin for being the very best LGBTQ bartender in town. Former "Gay Place" contributor Robbie Cohen wrote a poem in Garold's honor:: over the oil slick rainbows: of chain drive: there is a light that never goes out: a roman candle smile burns bright: perpetually refracting: kaleidoscopic love: welcoming me back into night: i love you garold bates
