Marking a half-century of Tommy, the rock opera that elevated three-chord hooligan rock into art, local post-punks Borzoi stand in for the Who this performance. Special guest singers assuming the various roles include Pleasure Venom’s Audrey Campbell as Sally Simpson, Dregs’ Evan Jones as Mrs. Walker, and Hola Beach’s Chris Nordahl as the “Pinball Wizard.”
German multi-reedist Peter Brötzmann remains a giant of free jazz and a serial collaborator of surprising sensitivity. Former Austinite Heather Leigh provides an atmospheric backdrop and acid counterpoint through her pedal steel guitar to Brötzmann’s outsider scales and aggressive blowing. The duo’s fourth LP, Sparrow Nights primes what’s likely an entirely improvised performance.
