Mommies & More: Baby Night

Not rated. Directed by Various.

REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Fri., July 20, 2001

Baby Night happens the last Wednesday of every month at the General Cinemas Barton Creek Square 14. It's not so much an event for babies as it is an oasis for their parents. One of the theatre's regular lineup of movies is selected as the month's offering and at this one screening (usually beginning around 7 or 8pm), infants and their parents are welcome. It's sweet relief for those parents who stay at home, never choosing to go to movies because of the racket their young ones might make, as well as an outstretched hand of welcome to those parents who bring their crying babies with them to movies with little regard to the viewing pleasure of other patrons. This is one movie where the infants are invited to exercise their lungs and make a stink. The idea actually is an adaptation of an old idea made new. Back in the olden days, way before multiplexes and partitioning, movie theatres would commonly have soundproofed balcony enclosures called "crying rooms," to which parents could escape with their squawking bundles of joy while continuing to watch the movie without disturbing the other patrons. Everybody's happy. This Barton Creek Square mall theatre doesn't have separate crying rooms, but a designated baby night is the next best thing.
