Les Photos d'Alix (Photos of Alix)

1980, NR, 18 min. Directed by Jean Eustache.

REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Thu., April 19, 2001

"Hieronymous Bosch's Garden of Delights" (1979, 34 min.); "Les Photos d'Alix/Photos of Alix" (1980, 18 min.); Le Cochon/The Pig (1970, 50 min.) D: Jean Eustache. These first two shorts are playful inquiries into the relationship between words and images. The Pig is Eustache's recording of the slaughtering, dismemberment, evisceration, and conversion into sausage of a farm pig graphic subject matter very much in keeping with the type of cultural documentaries of vanishing traditions that Eustache was so fond of filming. The film screens without subtitles, but all reports say that they are unnecessary to the comprehension of the movie.
