God of Cookery

Rated PG, 90 min. Directed by Lik Chi Li. Starring Stephen Chow, Karen Mok, Ng Man-Tat, Vincent Kok.

REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Wed., July 26, 2000

Stephen Chow wrote and stars in this comedy about an Iron Chef-type cook who is stripped of his title by a jealous apprentice, who reveals the God of Cookery to be a con man. Dejected, he spends time in a Shaolin monastery, learns kung-fu cooking styles, hooks up with a street food vendor, and invents a recipe for exploding, pissing shrimp balls, a popular success which helps him regain the title of the God of Cookery.
