Willie Varela: Maverick Outsider
NR Directed by Willie Varela.
REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Thu., Oct. 28, 1999
Willie Varela: Maverick Outsider is the current focus of the Austin Film Society’s bimonthly Expanding Cinema series that focuses on experimental film. The series is also co-sponsored by Cinemaker Co-op. Varela is a well-known El Paso filmmaker who is a pioneer of the “personal” style of film expression, as well as an advocate of the Super-8 format. Inspired to pick up a camera by the examples of John Lennon and Stan Brakhage, Varela has been making movies since the early Seventies. Since then he has shot more than 100 films with running times ranging from just a few minutes to over 100. This program will feature samples of his work; Varela will be present for a Q&A following the screening.
