The Old Dark House

The Old Dark House

1932, NR, 72 min. Directed by James Whale. Starring Boris Karloff, Raymond Massey, Gloria Stuart, Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton.

REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Thu., Oct. 21, 1999

The Austin Film Society’s current series examines the horror films from 1930 - 1960. The first six months of the series highlights classics of the Thirties. The Old Dark House features Karloff as an insane butler in an old dark house in the Welsh countryside, where several travelers are stranded and strange things happen. Karloff is supported by a great cast, including Titanic’s Gloria Sturart, who was cited in Variety’s 1932 review for her “extreme Decolletage.”
