REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Fri., Dec. 2, 1994

L.627 is an article in the French Public Health Code that prosecutes all offenses related to the possession, trade, and consumption of narcotics. This also describes the Parisian milieu in which this movie is set. Blending fact and fiction, professional actors and non-pros, cops and junkies, L.627 promises a searing portrait of this particular stratum of society. French filmmaker Tavernier ('Round Midnight, Coup de Torchon, Life and Nothing But) can usually be counted on to helm dramatically and morally substantial works in which all the characters have their reasons.
