The pomp and promise of Wednesday’s epic, star-studded Austin Music Awards behind us, a day party at the Liberty allowed this here alt-weekly to untuck its collective shirt and turn focus toward a few lesser known favorites in the Live Music Capital.

With all due respect to all the other excellent acts playing the Scoot Inn’s Thrasher/Converse day party this afternoon – among the best of which was Toronto hardcore superheros Fucked Up – let’s not mince words. There’s only moment that will remain in my memory from Thursday: Tyler, the Creator.

Since its permanent resurrection in the wake of SXSW Creative Director Brent Grulke's death, the Wild Seeds have evolved into a guitar band. That's not to say the catalog isn’t prominent. Any band with a songsmith as skilled as Michael Hall, a writer uncelebrated as one of Texas' best only because he's not a troubadour, will be known for its tuneage.

“It’s awfully early for rock & roll, isn’t it?” mused Lydia Loveless near the start of her noon set for KDHX’s 17th annual Twangfest at South Lamar’s Broken Spoke, the landmark honky-tonk an otherwise ideal setting. The answer was obvious, but her phrasing was telling.

The Austin Ballroom of the Convention Center bustled with this town’s finest on Wednesday night: fiddle phenom and scion Warren Hood, Octopus Project theremin temptress Yvonne Lambert, KUTX favorite Jay “Silver Fox” Trachtenberg, and the members of horn line Hard Proof Afrobeat. Wild Child, Wheeler Brothers, John Kunz – allstars one and all.
