Aztex Want Noise! (And More)

Official attendance for the Austin Aztex home opener last Saturday has been announced as 1,497. That blows away most predictions, and it sounds pretty accurate, based on how crowded the stands felt. As well as everything went, plans for further improvements are afoot, I'm assured, by both the team and a nascent supporters group, largely centered around making more fan noise. No official word from the Aztex, but I'm led to understand that if you show up with a drum, and the will to bang it, they'll treat you right.

Next up: the DFW Tornadoes, Saturday, May 17, 7:30pm at Round Rock High's Dragon Stadium, just off I-35 and FM 620. $8, $5 for kids. This is the third of four U.S. Open Cup qualifiers for the Aztex, who currently lead that race.

The European season comes to its climax next Wednesday, as Manchester United plays Chelsea in the Champions League Final: May 21, 1:30pm, live from Moscow on ESPN2. Those two went down to the last day of the season on Sunday before Man U took the English Premier League title. Other champions: PSV Eindhoven in Holland and Bayern Munich in Germany; France and Italy are both down to the wire this weekend, with Lyon having the inside track for their seventh straight title, and Inter Milan needing a win to claim their third straight (Parma-Inter is live on the Fox Soccer Channel, 8am Sunday).

Also: the FA Cup Final, Portsmouth-Cardiff, this Saturday, May 17, 10am, only on Setanta (pay-per-view or Fadó Irish Pub).

Russia's Zenit St Petersburg won their first major European trophy Wednesday, beating Glasgow Rangers 2-0 in the UEFA Cup final at City of Manchester Stadium.
