Return of the Lonestar Rollergirls
By Sofia Resnick, 11:52AM, Mon. Jan. 28, 2008
The Texas Roller Derby Lonestar Rollergirls, Austin's banked-track league, kicked off the 2008 season with a special bout at the Palmer Events Center, Sunday, Jan. 27. Last season's Calvello Cup Champions, Holy Rollers, were challenged by the All-Scar Army, a conglomeration of some of the strongest skaters from the league's other four teams: Cherry Bombs, Hellcats, Putas del Fuego, and Rhinestone Cowgirls.
The first sold-out bout of the season delivered in terms of exciting, slamming jams, deft defense, and angry-grrrl violence, i.e., panty shots aplenty.
Accolades from commentators Masterblader and Wes Page were given to Holy Rollers Anita Confess for top blocking and Smarty Pants for lead scoring jammer during the first quarter of the bout. Indeed, Smarty Pants was all over the track, literally fighting her way through All-Scar soldiers. At one point in the bout, Smarty Pants and Punky Bruiser teamed up against Rocky Casbah, a Cherry Bomb skating for the All-Scar team, who made several scores as a lead jammer Sunday night.
Many great jams throughout the night were interrupted by fouls, falls, and fights. What was supposed to be the last jam of the night, featuring lead jammers Puta del Fuego/All-Scar soldier Chola and Holy Roller Axle Rosie ended abruptly in a brawl, leading into the final jam, featuring lead jammers Smarty Pants and Dixie Sanchez, a Hellcat. Smarty fell, the whistle was blown, and time was called for Sunday's game, ending 56 to 29, deeming All-Scar Army the night's winner.
If Sunday's bout was any indication of what the rest of the Lonestar Rollergirls' 2008 season has in store, the other bouts are not to be missed. The schedule is available online at www.txrd.com; the next bout is Sunday, Feb. 17, between the Hellcats and Rhinestone Cowgirls.
All subsequent bouts will be held at the Austin Convention Center (500 E. Cesar Chavez), unless otherwise specified. Doors open at 6pm, bout starts at 7pm, and tickets are $15 for regular admission or $25 for VIP.
In other news, the Rhinestone Cowgirls are looking for a new mascot, so if you or anyone you know wants to spend some quality time with some sexy Rollergirls, visit the Cowgirls' TXRD site.
And don't miss the 2008 kickoff party, Friday, Feb. 15, at the Scoot Inn Bier Garten (1308 E. Fourth), $3 at the door, from 9pm to 2am.
