ATX TV Festival Rides Again With Justified: City Primeval

The guide for season 12 of the ATX TV Festival gets bigger with the announcement of the opening night screening of the world premiere of the new show about everyone's favorite Kentucky lawman in Justified: City Primeval.

The ATX TV team could have called it a day when they announced that this year's event (running June 1-4) will see legendary 11-time Emmy-winning producer/director James Burrows (Cheers, Friends, Taxi, Will & Grace) becoming the latest recipient of the Achievement in Television Excellence. However, today they added one of the most eagerly anticipated shows of the year as just part of a bigger programing slate.

The show is the the first spin-off from Justified, the Emmy-winning neo-Western that ran on FX from 2010 to 2015. Based on Elmore Leonard's City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, the new miniseries sees the return of morally unbending but ethically flexible Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), but with a new beat. Having given up on Kentucky and moved to Miami, he's called to Detroit to help hunt down the notorious Oklahoma Wildman (Boyd Holbrook) – and now the story will make a stop in Austin as the opening night screening. The series will debut this summer on FX, with next-day streaming on Hulu.

And ATX TV builds on its reputation for bringing together the people behind beloved shows with a special 25th anniversary screening of the pilot for Dawson’s Creek. This will be followed by a special panel looking back on the seminal show that took us inside the lives of the teens of Capeside, Mass., and made Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and James Van Der Beek household names. Confirmed panelists so far include writers/producers Liz Tigelaar (Tiny Beautiful Things, Little Fires Everywhere), Rina Mimoun (Mistresses, Everwood), Gina Fattore (Dare Me, Parenthood), Anna Fricke (Walker, Being Human), and Maggie Friedman (Firefly Lane, Witches of East End), in a conversation to be moderated by Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals); expect more names soon.

If that wasn't enough, break out your sporran for World Outlander Day on June 1, with a special conversation with the cast and creatives behind the Starz smash about a time-traveling nurse who finds passion and adventure in 18th century Scotland. Oh, yeah, and that means a premiere screening of the first episode of season 7, ahead of its broadcast premiere on June 16.

Also added to the roster this morning:

• Two comedy legends and a legendary couple in a one-on-one conversation as Ted Danson (Cheers, Mr. Mayor, The Good Place) and Mary Steenburgen (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Curb Your Enthusiasm) give insight into their lives and careers together.

• The women of The Good Doctor (ABC and Sony Pictures Television studios) with co-showrunner/executive producer Liz Friedman, executive producer Erin Gunn, and cast members Christina Chang, Fiona Gubelmann, and Bria Samoné Henderson.

• A special screening of Primo (Amazon Freevee), the new sitcom from New York Times best-selling author Shea Serrano and Emmy-winning producer Michael Schur (The Good Place, Parks and Recreation), based on Serrano's childhood on the southside of San Antonio. In attendance: Serrano and stars Ignacio Diaz-Silverio (The Good Fight) and Christina Vidal (The Terminal List).

• Funny AF panel (organized by Universal Studio Group) with Serrano, Mulligan co-creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer Sam Means, and actors Joel Kim Booster (Loot) and Jerrie Johnson (Harlem).

• Adding to the previously-announced season 3 premiere of The Righteous Gemstones (HBO), cast members John Goodman, Adam Devine, Edi Patterson, and Cassidy Freeman join creator, writer, executive producer, and actor Danny McBride as they discuss what's in store for everyone's favorite televangelists.

• iHeartPodcast’s TV Podcast Showcase gets meta with a special event about retro rewatch podcasts, with Christine Taylor and David Lascher of Hey Dude… The ‘90s Called, Ben Higgins and Ashley Iaconetti of The Bachelor podcast Almost Famous, Beverly Hills 90210 star Jennie Garth for 9021OMG, and Teddi Mellencamp and Tamra Judge of Two Ts in a Pod.

• A look behind the scenes of comedy docu-drama Jury Duty (Amazon Freevee) with showrunner/executive producer Cody Heller, executive producer Nicholas Hatton, executive producer David Bernad, and casting director Susie Farris.

• Everyone Is Doing Great season 2 world premiere with James Lafferty and Stephen Colletti of One Tree Hill, Alexandra Park (The Royals), and Cariba Heine (H20: Just Add Water).
