Pet Sematary Remake to Close SXSW Film

Midnighters, Festival Favorites, plus shorts all announced

Sometimes dead is better, but not when Stephen King's Pet Semetary is the closing night film for SXSW

Horror at the beginning, horror at the end: After SXSW Film (March 8-17) announced that Jordan Peele's eagerly awaited doppelganger chiller Us will be this year's opening night movie, today the festival confirmed it will close with the new adaptation of Stephen King's Pet Sematary.

The announcement comes as part of the latest major line-up addition, which includes more terror-tinged titles in the Midnighters, a buzzworthy selection from other fests, as well as episodic pilots, and the shorts and music video selections. They join a list of previously announced titles that includes keynote speaker Olivia Wilde's first feature as a director, Booksmart; Texas Film Hall of Fame 2019 inductee John Lee Hancock's period crime drama The Highwaymen; and Kathy Griffin: A Hell of a Story, the flame-haired firebrand's first ever concert movie.

However, the excitement keeps growing with Pet Sematary. Directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer (the duo behind satanic Hollywood starlet nightmare Starry Eyes), this new version of the King classic pits Jason Clarke and SXSW favorite Amy Seimetz against things that are better off left dead. The 1989 version is beloved by horror fans, but this version comes from two writers with experience of taking on such projects: Jeff Buhler (responsible for the upcoming revamp of the Grudge franchise) and David Kajganich (who updated Suspiria last year).

The horror continues with the Midnighters, with 10 creepers designed to keep SXSW audiences up at night. In one of the most intriguing collaborations in indie horror, Phil Brooks (aka former professional wrestler and UFC fighter CM Punk) has paired up with Travis Stevens (founder of cult-cool production house Snowfort Pictures), who makes his directorial debut with Chicago-set ghost story Girl on the Third Floor.

That will stand alongside another behind-the-camera debut, with Scottish actress Pollyanna McIntosh first feature as director: The third in the series that began in 2009 with cannibal shocker Offspring, then was subverted by Austin director Lucky McKee with 2011 feminist deconstruction pushing McIntosh's feral character to the fore The Woman, now McIntosh continues the twisted path with Darlin'. That makes her one of three female first-time directors in the Midnighters, alongside British filmmaker Abigail Blackmore (Tales From the Lodge) and Roxanne Benjamin (who gets her first solo directorial credit for wilderness chiller Body at Brighton Rock).

However, not everything supernatural is scary. Author Neil Gaiman, who had already been announced as a speaker, joins a roster of special events that includes David Byrne screening True Stories with a first look at Good Omens, the Amazon/BBC adaptation of his 1990 comedy-fantasy novel co-authored with late satire-and-sorcery master Terry Pratchett, about a devil (David Tennant) and an angel (Martin Sheen) who play a bickering odd couple as they try to delay the apocalypse.

Yet just as all things have a beginning, so they must end. So prepare to say farewell, kween, with a special screening of the season finale of Broad City, as the comedy blockbuster heads to its final run.

While SXSW has increasingly become a location for premieres for feature films (101 World premieres, 9 North American, and 3 U.S. and counting), today's list also includes the Festival Favorites, drawing on films that have already screened but will make their Austin debut. That includes two films with a strong local connection: Evangelical comedy Sister Aimee, starring Austinites Ann Margaret Hollyman, Lee Eddy, Macon Blair, and Nathan Zellner; and Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins, giving the Texas hellraising journalist the coverage she so richly deserves. Add to that list Her Smell, Alex Ross Perry's radical twist on the "rise and fall of a rock star" narrative anchored by a frenetic and mesmerizing central performance by Elisabeth Moss.

SXSW runs March 8-17. For full coverage of the entire fest, visit www.austinchronicle.com/sxsw.
