Oscar's Texas Ties
Academy Award nominations dropped this morning

The slate of 2014 Academy Award nominations has the world buzzing this morning.
From Gravity and American Hustle's 10 nominations each to Jonah Hill's second career nomination, the Internet is all atwitter over who made the list and who didn't. Will the fourth time be the charm of always-the-bridesmaid Leonardo DiCaprio? Was Emma Thompson's Saving Mr. Banks performance unjustly ignored?
But as usual, our favorite game to play on award nomination morning is to look for all the familiar local names. Here's who we found:
• Matthew McConaughey: The local leading man is rightly recognized in the Actor in a Leading Role category for his turn in Dallas Buyers Club.
• The Act of Killing: This Drafthouse Films picture has been nominated in the Documentary Feature category. Read our interview with director Joshua Oppenheimer here.
• Cutie and the Boxer, by University of Texas grad Zachary Heinzerling, was nominated in the same category.
• Before Midnight: The script for the third part of the beloved trilogy by Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, and Ethan Hawke is up for a Writing – Adapted Screenplay award.
The complete list of nominees is available here. Congratulations to all, and best of luck come March 2.
