Pick Up Your Paintball Guns for 'War'

By Richard Whittaker, July 29, 2013, 5:03pm, Picture in Picture

Grab your combat goggles, it's time to invade the best seats in the house. Drafthouse Films is tooling up for a special theatrical preview screening of I Declare War, complete with a paintball-splattered game of capture the flag.

I Declare War is the antithesis of the modern glossy kids movie. A bunch of children go into the woods to play a good old fashioned game of war, with sticks as guns and trees as forts. But where directors Robert Wilson and Jason Lapeyre turn the story upside down is by showing everything through the lens of the young imagination.

Drafthouse Films acquired the Fantastic Fest 2012 audience award winner in January, but it was already Drafthouse CEO Tim League's top picks going into the festival. It's available now on VOD, but before its Aug. 30 theatrical release Drafthouse is holding a special Rolling Roadshow at Stunt Ranch out in the Hill Country.

Tickets are $10, but for $25 you buy access to a massive game of paintball capture the flag, complete with 100 rounds of ammo. After the screening, there'll be a special Q&A with Wilson and Lapeyre, who will be joined by actor Gage Munroe (who plays War's mini-Eisenhower, the self-promoted genera P.K.) On-site catering will come courtesy of Micklethwait Craft Meats and Dia De Las Paletas, plus Thirsty Planet Buckethead IPA and Yellow Armadillo Wheat on tap. Plus, there will be a live explosion photo booth. And when have the words "photo booth" and "explosion" ever been a bad idea together?

I Declare War at Stunt Ranch, Aug. 9. Tickets available now at www.drafthouse.com.
