Cannes You Dig It?

By Vincent Van Horn, May 18, 2012, 3:43pm, Picture in Picture

It's 5:20 am over here and instead of going to bed like a good boy oughta, I'm typing away at this instead.

So how do you follow getting a kiss blown to you by Bill Murray? I'll tell you how: You spend a whole day falling asleep at every movie you go see.

Yeah! I'm so crazy wild! I went to movie screenings at Cannes and took 10-second naps every 5 seconds! I'm so nuts!

Today I was basically everyone's old grandma: I was sleepy, hungry, and just all around confused. "What are they saying I can't understand them!"

While walking from one theatre to another I did run into one of this year's feature film jury members. You might have heard of him, his name is Ewan McGregor. Yeah that’s right, we just made small talk until eventually – totally his idea – we reenacted a scene from Star Wars. Don’t believe me??? Joke's on you, kids. The joke is on you. Thank god for cameras. Just peep the pic below.

After that strenuous light saber battle, the plan was to see the documentary Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir. But I couldn't get it on time, and by then I was even more exhausted and wiped, so I sort of stumbled into the next movie I could find. This movie was… not all that good. Between cat naps, I sort of involuntarily edited the movie with my in- and out- state of consciousness. It was so bad, it made me question the kind of feature-length films Cannes is accepting as "official selections."

Well, turns out it wasn't the "official selection" we thought we were in line for. Nope: This was a feature being shown by someone who rented out a theatre in hopes of finding a buyer to walk in (less so us, the Sleepy Suzannes with no direction home). The puny 40 person crowd should have probably tipped us off. But in the end, that movie was great. Great for nap times!! HEY-OHHHH.

So we walked on a little more. Some of our group today got to see some classic James Bond and fireworks at the outdoor Cinéma de la Plage. Here’s a picture of it getting set up before the sun went home.

Some of us got excited about some kids getting excited about the Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted premiere.

And some of us are going to do a better job of actually watching movies tomorrow.
