Depp will receive inaugural acting prize

While traditionally a fest devoted to the art of screenwriting, the Austin Film Festival clearly can appreciate an actor who knows how to work his mouth around some writer's words. To that end, they'll be handing Johnny Depp the first-ever Extraordinary Contribution to Film – Acting Award this Saturday.
Depp will also present the previously announced Distinguished Screenwriter Award to Caroline Thompson, the scripter behind Edward Scissorhands and Corpse Bride, among others. But wait, there's more: Depp will also introduce Friday night's retrospective screening of Edward Scissorhands at the Paramount Theatre. Prior to the Edward Scissorhands show, Depp will introduce the local premiere of his new film, The Rum Diary, an adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel.
The Austin Film Festival runs Oct. 20-27. The Chron's AFF preview – including an interview with awardee Caroline Thompson – is out on stands and the internets this Thursday.
