Taking the Weird Around the World

By Kimberley Jones, September 21, 2011, 1:54pm, Picture in Picture

Ever wondered if "slacker" translates in Australia? Next month, Austin sister city Adelaide will find out, when Adelaide's Mercury Cinema hosts a mini-film festival featuring some of Austin's finest homegrown films.

Called the Keep Austin Weird Fest: A Celebration of Our Sister City's Creative Culture, the series runs Oct. 8-16. We heartily approve of the seven-film lineup, which includes music doc Echotone, Andrew Bujalski's Beeswax, the Zellner Brothers' Goliath, Jeff Nichols' Cannes-prize-winning Take Shelter (which hasn't even opened here yet – sheesh, Australia), Ben Steinbauer's Winnebago Man, and two comedies from Bob Byington, Registered Sex Offender and Harmony and Me.

It all goes down at Adelaide's Mercury Cinema. Road trip, anyone?
