Shout Out to the Queer Austin Music Award Winners

Can we get a “yas, yas, yas”?

Last night Austin’s sonic movers and shakers descended on ACL Live at the Moody Theater for the 37th annual Austin Music Awards. Lauded as the “unofficial” kickoff to SXSW, the awards seek to honor A-Town’s top musicians chosen by you, for you, only lovely readers.

But, dear qweeahs, we at the Qmmunity section are over the moon to see so many queer winners recognized at this year’s awards: songstress Gina Chavez, following last year’s LP Lightbeam, took home both Best Latin and Best Female Vocalist, making her now an 11-time AMA winner. “Leather Daddy” rabble-rousers Sailor Poon walked away with Best Punk, and hip-hop troupe Magna Carda received the award for Best Hip-Hop/Rap.

It’s no secret Austin’s music scene is brimming with talented, hard-working, and visionary LGBTQmmunity members (just take a look at the finalists and runners-up, where we counted no less than six queer honorees), but it’s always extra-special to see them recognized. Without further ado, here are your queer 37th annual Austin Music Awards winners.

Best Hip-Hop/Rap: Magna Carda

Best Latin: Gina Chavez

Best Punk: Sailor Poon

Best Female Vocalist: Gina Chavez

And, if you want to catch these artists (and a whole lot more queer’d shenanigans) at this this year’s SXSW, check out Qmmunity’s queer SXSW guide online tomorrow, Fri., March 1, and in next week’s print issue.
