Kissing for a Cause
LGBT community to lock lips at the Red Room.
By Candice Gallion, 1:00PM, Fri. Jul. 26, 2013
As many of you have no-doubt heard, the Red Room at Fourth & Lavaca was allegedly turning away LGBT patrons last weekend. This weekend a group of internet-based activists are taking back the "gayborhood."
As news of the Friday's event spread among Austin's LGBT community and allies, many wanted to make it clear that discrimination would not be tolerated in Austin. That momentum has crescendoed into a good ol' fashioned Queer Kiss-In tonight (July 26) at 10:45pm in front of the Red Room.
So have at it, folks. Bring a kissing partner, glitter, rainbows, unicorns, your best booty shorts, signs, more glitter, and your wonderful self to show your support for Austin's LGBT community. Let the Red Room know this sort of discrimination isn't about to go down in your city. As the organizers said in their Facebook invite, "This is our house, bitch."
UPDATE: Looks like this weekend will be full of snogging. GetEqual is planning a second kiss-in for RedRoom's Saturday "Ladies Night." It's about time this town had a lesbian bar!
Note: There have been as of yet unsubstantiated rumors that the Red Room has folded. Organizers for the Kiss-In say that the event will happen whether or not the club is dark.
