The Push Pens at Pride
Texas Hip-Hop with a Positive LGBT Message
By Liz Williams, 11:26AM, Thu. Sep. 20, 2012
Hip-hop. Theater. Acoustic. Spoken-word. These pals from San Antonio make the trek to Austin for a post-Pride Sunday performance put on by allgo.
The Push Pens are Esquivel, Foxx, Muñoz and they'll be bringing the rhymes while Mario Cortes accompanies on acoustic guitar. They are a mix of "queer identified and straight identified men."
If you haven't yet heard the trio, their music tackles issues of domestic violence, homophobia, and transphobia – and they want you in the conversation. Their most recent collaboration is the hip-hop musical Last Call for Truth, parts of which will be incorporated into this Sunday's live show.
For all the serious issues, The Push Pens are hilarious as well as talented.
The party is presented by allgo, a long-time Texas LGBT foundation that celebrates queer people of color, specifically supporting diverse artists and their expressions.
The Push Pens appear live at the Historic Victory Grill
Sunday, September 23, 7pm.
