That's What Friends Are For

Sometimes we queers get wrapped up in the struggle. With so many people throwing shade our way, it’s easy to get caught up in the oppression Olympics. We forget about the people who stand by our side.

As recent headlines attest, the choice to support the LGBTQIA community can sometimes carry significant risk. It’s a risk that Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (and bisexuals and transgender folk, too) has been taking for decades.

We are used to seeing PFLAG in pride parades, but few know that they have been there from the beginning – carrying signs in New York's Christopher Street Liberation Day March. PFLAG Austin, founded in 1994, fought for our rights long before Will and Grace was on the air, carrying a message of love and inclusion in an age where Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was considered progress. As they march down Congress Avenue, give them your loudest whoops and whistles. They share in our pride.
