'Mo Music: New Music Tuesday
Get some with Lykke Li and Gay Place
By Rob Cohen, 3:20PM, Tue. Nov. 2, 2010
Indie pixie Lykke Li came out of the forest this week with two new tunes. The rollicking and tough "Get Some" is a refreshing return. Download the track for free in exchange for your email at her official site.
Crystal Castles have just released a new version of their song "Not in Love" featuring Robert Smith. This is totally what the Cure should sound like now. Free Mp3 over at Stereogum.
Disco punk queers and Gay Place favorites MEN have sexy desert fun in the new video for their track "Off Our Backs".
Queer San Francisco psych rockers Girls, who you might know for their NSFW video featuring a penis as a microphone, have released the first single, "Heartbreaker", from their new EP, Broken Dreams Club, out November 22. It's more of the same sunny, simple garage rock, but if you're a fan, you're probably too high to complain.
I was lucky enough to get to see Jonsi this past Tuesday. Opening band, the female trio Mountain Man we're a pleasant surprise. They had me and the entire crowd under a spell. Their music, which is mostly just their three voices and sparse guitar was breathtaking. Check out this video, recorded at SXSW.
Despite being a bit one-note, Jonsi's symphonic pop was a whimsical and majestic treat. The whole forest elf stage show was cute and his voice was in top form. It was all a bit too clean and neat for me, so it was a relief when they let the Sigur Ros-style noise out for closer "Grow Till Tall." Can't find that great a video for that song, but there's this very nice one here.
The Decemberists announced their new album The King Is Dead and are sharing a new song Down By The Water, just in time for this blog post.
Finally, I recommend you all go see Of Montreal + Janelle Monae this Wednesday at the East Side Drive In. Both their latest albums are awesome, and this perfect pair really know what it means to put on a freaknasty show.
'Til next time, this is Fauxrrissey keeping a queer ear to the underground.
