Wish List: Bus Passes for Families

Austin Voices helps kids get to and from school

Wish List: Bus Passes for Families

There are local kids dealing with the stress of an unstable living situation. Unsurprisingly, living without necessities such as electricity and heat can hinder a child’s ability to focus or learn in school.

Austin Voices for Education and Youth revolves around their goal to "have every kid in school, every day, ready to learn,” said the organization’s executive director Allen Weeks. It seeks to make life easier for struggling families by keeping both home and school life stable for children.

The organization has six family resource centers within Austin Independent School District that assist an estimated 1,800 families each year with finding housing, health care, transportation, employment, and other basic needs.

Donations such as bus passes can provide a safe and easy way for children to get to school and allows their parents to travel to work or interviews. Other donations in the form of gift cards for food and new or gently used bikes are also needed. Donations from the greater Austin community will help kids in high risk neighborhoods to focus on simply being kids.
