Nine-year veteran Armando Perez ID'ed as wounded officer

Names in Officer-Involved Shooting Released

The names of the suspect who was killed and the Austin Police Department officer who was wounded Sunday morning have been released. (See "Officer-Involved Shooting After Attempted Burglary," April 3.)

Officer Armando Perez, a 9-year veteran with APD, is the officer shot while attempting to apprehend the suspect of an attempted burglary that took place at the Austin City Lofts parking garage.

The suspect, who was shot and killed, was identified today as Darrin Andrew Martin.

Police Chief Art Acevedo said during his press briefing Sunday that Perez was “conscious, alert, and in good spirits, but shaken up” at Brackenridge Hospital with his family on friends. On Monday, shortly after his identity was made public, APD reported that Perez had been discharged from the hospital. He’ll now go on paid administrative leave while Internal Affairs and the Travis County District Attorney’s Office conduct their separate investigations into the incident. Perez will remain on paid leave until both investigations are complete, meaning that it could be a year or more – however long it takes the DA’s office to present his case to the grand jury – before Perez gets back to work.
