Bastrop Pets Need Austin Homes

We told you this morning about the shelters opened to help humans escaping the Central Texas fires. Now Austin Pets Alive and the Austin Humane Societ needs your help with the relocated animals endangered by the blaze.

Last night, Austin Pets Alive placed all the animals in its shelter in foster homes so they could take all the dogs relocated from the Bastrop Animal Shelter. To deal with this massive influx of needy pets, the APA is offering free adoptions at its shelter at 2807 Manchaca. Similarly, the Austin Humane Society (124 W. Anderson, which just got its heat-stricken AC units back up and running) took all the Bastrop shelter's cats, and will be offering reduced-cost adoptions all day. Both shelters will be open until 7pm.

Canned dog and cat food
Tidy Cat litter
Dog leashes
Rawhides/bones
Metal dog bowls

Ice

The donations will be accepted at the Manchaca shelter, or at local Petsmarts.

Of course, you should not take a new pet just because of the disaster (the last thing anyone needs is these animals to be back in a shelter in a week's time) but if you have been thinking about adding someone furry to your household, this is the time to make it happen.
