AHS Rescues 150 Dogs Living in Squalor

The Austin Humane Society is asking for help to help care for 150 dogs rescued over the past few days from a home in Bastrop County.

The dogs were living in a trash, feces and urine-infested home. None had received medical care and many were malnourished. Consider the plight of Smokey (pictured at right): Rescuers with the AHS and Bastrop County Animal Control thought Smokey was just a pile of old carpeting and feces until he started moving around; the 11-pound dog had an extra 10 pounds of feces-matted fur attached to him at the time of his rescue. (Whether the Bastrop couple will face animal cruelty charges remains unknown.)

The animals are safe now, but the AHS needs your help to continue to provide care for these pups until they're ready for adoption. The seizure has doubled the shelter's population, and AHS is asking for donations of medium, large, and extra-large crates; medium and large animal carriers; towels; and, of course, money. Supplies can be dropped off at the shelter, at 124 W. Anderson Lane.
