Down On Death

By Jordan Smith, December 14, 2010, 1:43pm, Newsdesk

Newly imposed death sentences in Texas declined to a new low of just eight sentences handed down in 2010, according to the annual Texas Death Penalty Developments report put together by the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.

Overall, death sentences have dropped more than 70% since 2003, according to the report.

Since 2007, only 21 counties have imposed death sentences – out of the 43 handed down since then, Dallas Co. leads the pack with seven sentences followed by Harris Co. with six. In all, TCADP reports, just 8% of Texas counties imposed death sentences between 2007 and 2010.
