UT Shooter Kills Self

By Jordan Smith, September 28, 2010, 11:25am, Newsdesk

Police from across the city are working to clear two crime scenes and search for a potential second suspect in this morning's shooting at the University of Texas.

According to UT Police Chief Robert Dahlstrom, a shooter was reported on campus just after 8am this morning. He later committed suicide inside the Perry-CastaƱeda Library. Reports indicate that the man was wearing a ski mask and sporting an AK-47. Several shots were fired randomly outside near the library before the suspect went inside. No one else has been reported injured as a result of the incident, police said.

Meanwhile, however, SWAT teams from Austin Police, Travis Co. Sheriff's Office and the Dept. of Public Safety are assisting UTPD in systematically checking all area buildings in an "methodical" effort to "eliminate the [possibility of a] second suspect," APD Chief Art Acevedo said at a press conference.

No other information about the shooter is available at this time, including whether he was a student at UT.

Police are also working two crime scenes, one outside where shots were fired and one inside the library where the shooter committed suicide.

Police are also working buildings to check for any other weapons or explosives that might have been left by the suspect.

Officials say they hope to have North Campus reopened within the hour, but all classes have been canceled today, and police are asking that everyone steer clear of the area. People currently on campus are being asked to stay inside.
