D&D Dispatch No. 3: Not at D&D
A reporter leaves the Dog & Duck, worries about Bo Derek
By Nora Ankrum, 9:12PM, Tue. Nov. 4, 2008
The Internet was not my friend at Dog & Duck tonight, so I left the raucous crowd (and crazy-long bathroom line) behind to return to my quiet house, where I can reflect on the year 2000, the last time I went to D&D on election night. What happened then? I was smooshed in a crowd of hundreds and hundreds of people out in the street, on 11th, near Congress, where Bo Derek strangely enough was making a speech, but that was okay because the election was called for Al Gore.
Then I cheerily retreated to the cozy Dog & Duck for a celebratory pint, and what happened? They suddenly called it for Bush. I tried to close my eyes and make it go away, but it refused--for eight long years.
Tonight, things were different. When I left D&D, CNN was projecting Ohio for Obama. And when I got home, Obama had 207 electoral votes to McCain's 138. So apparently, switching locations does not affect the election. The only thing that would worry me now is Bo Derek showing up at my door.
