UPDATE: Early Voting Done, Down From 2005

By Richard Whittaker, May 7, 2008, 11:00am, Newsdesk

Tuesday was the last day – and the biggest day – for early voting according to Travis County Elections Division. In a last-minute dash before election day on May 10, 5,341 voters turned out or sent their mail-in ballots in, bringing the early voting total to 19,615. That was over a quarter of all early votes, and almost double Monday's turn-out. The numbers are still down from the 2005 results of 26,633, which is the last time these particular council seats were up for re-election, but whether that translates into a lower final turn-out, or people are just waiting to get a better grasp of the issues, waits to be seen after Saturday.

UPDATE: One of our happy forum users asked whether these figures are for Travis County registered voters or just for the city of Austin jurisdiction. It's for the whole county. Thanks for asking.
