County Clerk Accepting Ballot by Mail Applications

Austin-Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir announced that her office is accepting applications to vote early by mail for the upcoming November 6, 2007, election.

“We want to be sure that every eligible voter knows about the opportunity to vote early,” DeBeauvoir said. “For some, the best option is voting by mail.”

DeBeauvoir said that voting by mail is especially helpful to travelers as well as elderly and disabled voters who find it difficult to get to a polling place.

“Texas provides two options for voting early,” DeBeauvoir said. “Anyone can vote early in person, but a voter must meet certain qualifications to apply for a ballot by mail.”

To vote by mail in Travis County, a person must be registered to vote in the county and meet one of four criteria:
· 65 years of age or older
· disabled
· out of the county for the entire voting period (October 22 - November 2); or
· confined in jail, but eligible to vote.

The deadline for submitting an application for a ballot by mail is Tuesday, October 30. Applications can be downloaded from the Travis County Clerk’s Elections Division web site at: www.traviscountyelections.org, or by calling the office at 512-854-4996.

Early Voting in Person runs from Monday, October 22 - Friday, November 2. Voters can cast a ballot at any early voting location.

On Election Day, voters must cast a ballot from their registered precinct. Election Day is Tuesday, November 6, 2007.

Sample ballots are available on the County Clerk’s web site:
