The Black Keys and Bootsy Collins Top Latest SXSW Music Announcement

By Carys Anderson, January 24, 2024, 11:00am, Earache!

South by Southwest brought in the big guns for its third wave of showcasing artists, including blues rock duo the Black Keys and Parliament-Funkadelic bassist Bootsy Collins.

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney are set to hit all corners of the spring festival, which runs March 8-16. Documentary This Is a Film About the Black Keys premieres in the film program, while SXSW announced last week that the artists would deliver a keynote address at the conference. Collins is no Austin stranger either: He joined Chuck D in conversation at SXSW 2013, and more recently lent a hand on BLK ODYSSY’s 2023 LP DIAMONDS & FREAKS.

Other heavy hitters in today’s announcement include indie sleaze survivors STRFKR, past Levitation performers Shannon & the Clams, Atlanta R&B artist Chase Shakur, Los Angeles hip-hop duo Flyana Boss, and Santa Cruz hardcore band Scowl. On the heels of a Radio/East gig with local act (and fellow showcasing artist) Font this weekend, Nashville punks Snõõper plot more Austin shows this spring.

On the international front, note large followings for Panamanian singer-songwriter Boza, Australian pop rockers Lime Cordiale, Indian pop artist Ankur Tewari, and Brazilian rapper Marcelo D2. Taiwanese MC Majin schedules an Austin appearance shortly after competing on The Rappers, an MTV-produced program from her native country.

More notable additions to the lineup: California singer-songwriter Angélica Garcia, who taped an Austin City Limits performance with Adrian Quesada in support of his 2022 album Boleros Psicodélicos; former Frankie Cosmos keyboardist Gabrielle Smith, who records under Gabby’s World; jazz-funk fuser Alisa Amador, winner of the 2022 NPR Tiny Desk Contest; New Jersey rapper Chris Patrick, booked by SXSW in 2022; and indie rocker Allegra Krieger, who rolls through town with Katy Kirby next month.

As always, SXSW pulls a large chunk of its artist pool from Austin. Local acts announced today include: The Alex Coke & Carl Michel Sextet, Ben Buck, Ben Kweller, Big Wy's Brass Band, Blakchyl, Blue Water Highway, Cactus Lee, Caleb De Casper, Cloudchord, College of Hip Hop Knowledge, Cotton Mather, Creekbed Carter Hogan, Curtis McMurtry, DAIISTAR, Deer Fellow, Die Slo, Dj Napalm, Dual Core, the Eric Hisaw Band, Font, Jeff Lofton, J Soulja, Madison Baker, Me Nd Adam, Midnight Navy, My Education, Natalie Price, Night Drive, the Oxys, the Past Lives, Peelander-Z, Pendulum Hearts, Restos, Schatzi, Six Missing, Space Goonz, Star Parks, Suzanna Choffel, Taija Kerr, Utley3, Vertarias, West 22nd, and Zach Person. Katy artist Dende, Beaumont rapper Big Jade, and McAllen musician and She Shreds Media founder Reyna Tropical beef up the fest’s Texas roster.
