SXSW Adds Sasami, Petey, John Moreland, Stunna Girl, and More

36 days out, festival now adds music weekly

South by Southwest, just over five weeks away, continues to drip out its music lineup with lineup additions that are now arriving weekly. Today’s list welcomes penetrating songwriter John Moreland, fun UK pop figure Baby Queen, and Sasami.

Sasami carries the intrigue of a heavily nu-metal-influenced pivot for upcoming sophomore Squeeze, including a cathartic take on Daniel Johnston's "Sorry Entertainer.”

Also pulling up to the mid-March mega conference are “Runway” rapper Stunna Girl, witty, sleaze-rock-referencing Seattle act Advertisement, and First Nations hip-hop group Snotty Nose Rez Kids. Richmond, Virginia-based singer-songwriter Benét (Benét Nutall) continued playful indie pop moves on Bayonet Records with November’s remixed Game Over: Reloaded. Out of New Orleans, Esther Rose curves on a warm alt-country path, including a 2020 covers compilation spanning Sheryl Crow to Hank Williams. Los Angeles’ Petey, meanwhile, slots in as a lovably outside-the-box lyricist and TikTok weirdo.

Other notables: R&B/pop vocalist Kayan reps Mumbai, Making Movies brings their Afro-Latin grooves, Swedish trio ViVii imports lovely indie pop, NYC’s Ilham mixes up a sweet voice with up-front attitude in her modern R&B adventures, and fellow Queens artist Akinyemi enraptures with unique wordplay and visuals.

As usual, Austin stacks loads of talent with Blackillac, Calder Allen, Cecilia & the Broken Hearts, Clarence James, Gothess Jasmine, Invoke, Kiko Villamizar, Lesly Reynaga, LHF Lil Ke, Lion Heights, Mama Duke Mother Falcon, OJO, Quentin and the Past Lives, Shaun Solo, Teddythelegacy, Tequila Rock Revolution, and World Music Unleashed.
