SXSW List No. 7

By Kevin Curtin and Raoul Hernandez, February 12, 2016, 10:25am, Earache!

South by Southwest continues stocking up for next month’s convergence. Today’s new batch of 147 acts, featuring the return of 2015 buzz band Børns, downer folk favorite Sun Kil Moon, PCP-laced rappers Flatbush Zombies, and first wave German krautrockers Faust, brings the Music conference total to 1,559 – about three-quarters of its full firepower.

While SX keeps its true headliners close to the vest until early March – the Music portion runs March 15-20 – the seventh lineup drop peppers a handful of noteworthy bookings. Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Dion, singer of immortals “The Wanderer” and “Runaround Sue,” makes the scene, as do crass country broads Birdcloud, Jimmy Buffett lieutenant Mac McAnally, indie folkers The Head & the Heart, Oregonian doom metallers Lord Dying, dark comedy rapper Open Mike Eagle, garage psych cadets Cosmonauts, and color-coded indie-rock/pop/hip-hop crossover crew RDGLDGRN.

Of the dueling factions of Faust (b.1971), SXSW welcomes the version led by founders Jean-Hervé Péron and Werner “Zappi” Diermaier.

The lion share of today’s list hails Stateside, but a couple mid-March travelers peak our interest especially: British neo-soul toughs the Heavy and Malaysia’s preeminent pop singer-songwriter Yuna. Azerbaijani percussionist Natig Shirinov also bears closer inspection as the acknowledged master of the nagara, a double-headed hand drum.

Meanwhile, 20 names add to the vast local ranks: Annabelle Chairlegs, JD Clark, Croy & the Boys, Destiny Bond, the Hot Nut Riveters, Richy Hyliger, Jenifer Jackson, Los Coast, the Mau Mau Chaplains, Missio, Mobley, Mr. Lewis & the Funeral 5, Night Drive, OBN IIIs, Pleasers, Carrie Rodriguez, Shurman, Jonathan Terrell, the Ugly Beats, Carl Weathersby.

Make that 22 if you count semi-residents Blue October and recent ex-pats the Roosevelts.

Peruse previous lists, and expect another a week from today.
