SXSW Music: Mega Third List

L7, the Cult, Loretta Lynn and 556 more added to the Fest

South By Southwest beefs up its 2016 Music lineup this morning with the third and largest artist announcement yet. Highlights include 83-year-old country pioneer Loretta Lynn, reunited grunge heroines L7, and UK goth rockers the Cult. The addition of 559 acts brings SXSW’s yearly total to 928 and, ultimately, that ain’t even the half of it.

Other points of intrigue for the spring convergence, scheduled March 15-20, include English indies Bloc Party, veteran folksinger Judy Collins, garage-psych burnouts Dandy Warhols, NYC rock & roll poet Garland Jeffreys, Detroit punks Protomartyr, Fiery Furnaces halfsie Eleanor Friedberger, alternative folk rockers Thao & the Get Down Stay Down, Oklahoma pop/rock upstarts Broncho, rising rapper Mick Jenkins, and British post-punks Sad Lovers & Giants, playing their first gig on American soil.

SXSW’s third list also presents an unofficial theme of rock legend offspring, with Ozzy Osbourne’s eldest daughter Aimee showcasing synth-pop as ARO, Sting’s gender-fluid kid Eliot Sumner hitting town as an artsy, bass playing, singer-songwriter, and the Moonlandingz, which features Plastic Ono Band scion Sean Lennon, his Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger writing partner Charlotte Kemp Muhl, and members of British scuzz punks Fat White Family, who’ve also been announced as SXSW 2016 performers.

As always, this latest lineup segment brings musicians from all over the globe, including Mexico (female-fronted garage punks Le Butcherettes), Japan (buzzy rapper KOHH), and the little known north African country of Mauritania (9-string-harp-playing vocal star Noura Mint Seymali). And that’s hardly at the expense of us townies, because after Californian acts, Austinities lead the invitees herein with a whopping 58 local entries. Behold Austin’s new SXSWers:
