Fun Fun Fun Fest Live Shot: Snoop Dogg

With Uncle Snoop now BFFs with everyone from Willie Nelson to Buzz Aldrin, it’s easy to forget that America’s cuddliest canine was once a menace to society. On Friday night, the FFF crowd was happy to simply bask in the Doggfather’s hazy G-funk aura.

The Long Beach ambassador with the long and loping flow limped onstage to the pounding dancehall riddim of “Here Comes the King,” the reggae single that recently Reincarnated Calvin Broadus as Snoop Lion. There was enough bass to temporarily blow the speakers. While Snoop never missed a beat, by the time sound was restored, he had morphed back into a rapping Dogg, just like the 1992 video that announced his name to the world.

Flanked by two scantily-clad dancers and a deviant dog mascot that was clearly not house broken, the guest verse virtuoso showcased his contributions to 50 Cent’s “P-I-M-P,” Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” DJ Khaled’s “All I Do is Win,” and Akon’s not-so-subtle “I Wanna Fuck You.”

The payoff came in the form of lowrider classics “Gin and Juice” and “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” before “Sexual Eruption” climaxed into “Beautiful” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” Throwing a bone to those who were nothing but wee things when he first rapped “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang,” Snoop closed with Bruno Mars and Wiz Khalifa collabo “Young, Wild and Free” before morphing into Snoop Lion one last time for set exodus “Jammin’.”
